Audio and Video Courses for Teaching L2 / FL Italian: Interactional, Linguistic and Pedagogical Aspects

Abstract

This study aims to explore the interactional, linguistic, and pedagogical characteristics of the video courses that accompany five L2/FL Italian textbooks. The qualitative analysis confirms that these teaching aids share many aspects with the genre of the television sitcom, both in terms of the varieties of spoken language and of some interactional patterns. The fine analysis of an episode has in fact highlighted some problematic aspects concerning the temporality and sequentiality of the actions, which make these interactions unnatural. The language spoken in these sitcoms (which we define as pasteurized) is a neostandard Italian characterized by little diatopic variation. Furthermore, from a pedagogical standpoint, analytical activities that go beyond comprehension exercises and vocabulary drills are scarce or nonexistent. It is desirable that future teaching materials will reflect the heterogeneity and variability of spoken Italian.

  • Roberta Ferroni, Università per Stranieri di Perugia

    Roberta Ferroni has taught in the degree course in Italian Language and Literature and in the Master's and Doctorate school of the University of Sao Paulo. Her research concerns topics such as the study of interaction in the foreign language classroom, interactional competence in different contexts of interaction and Italian emigration. She is currently teaching in the master’s degree program ItaLiN (Teaching Italian as a Foreign Language) at the University for Foreigners of Perugia.

  • Franco Pauletto, Universidade Complutense de Madrid

    Franco Pauletto has earned a doctorate in linguistics from Stockholm University (2017), where he carried out research activities in the departments of Romance Languages and Classics and of Teaching and Learning. He is currently working as a lecturer at the philology department of Madrid’s Complutense University. His research deals with the acquisition of L2 Italian and with various pragmatic phenomena that characterize spoken interaction, within the theoretical and methodological framework of conversation analysis.
