Historiographical Trajectory of Artificial Intelligence: Contexts and Influences

Abstract

The history of artificial intelligence (AI) spans various contexts, including culture, science, businesses, and government. Over time, theoretical advances have guided technological research, propelling development in six dimensions: capture, representation, storage, processing, modeling, and action. The integration of AI into society has entailed changes influenced by these four contexts. From myths and alchemy to the Industrial Revolution and the emergence of research institutions, AI has traversed cultures and commercial interests, shaping its course throughout history. This work provides an analysis of the trajectory of artificial intelligence, highlighting significant contributions that have shaped its development, aiming to identify the interests that have directed it. Understanding such interests can facilitate a technological and socio-political understanding over time, demystifying artificial intelligence as a recent subject and enabling critical analyses of its history.
