Metamorphosis through the pen of a 17th-century German woman: the art and science of Maria Sibylla Merian

Abstract

This essay aims to initiate an interpretive analysis of the life and work of a woman—an artist and naturalist—from the 17th and 18th centuries: Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717). A review of the literature reveals that the region known today as Germany lacked a centralized state at that time. During this period of transition from a feudal to a modern state, women did not enjoy much freedom. However, benefiting from a highly favorable family environment, Maria Sibylla was able to develop her artistic and scientific talents; in the 17th century, she published two notable works—*Neües Blumenbuch* and *Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung und sonderbare Blumennhrung*—featuring images derived from meticulous observation of insect life cycles and a process that had been little studied until then: metamorphosis.

    Doutora em Educação Escolar - Formação de Professores pela Universidade Estadual Paulista ''Julio de Mesquita Filho'' - UNESP (Campus Araraquara) (2010), mestre em Educação - Ensino de Ciências pela Universidade Metodista de Piracicaba - UNIMEP (2003), especialista em Educação Ambiental e Recursos Hídricos pela Universidade de São Paulo - USP (São Carlos) (2001) e licenciada em Ciências Biológicas pela Universidade Metodista de Piracicaba - UNIMEP (1998). Atualmente é professora Associada III do Instituto de Ciências Biológicas (ICB) da Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG). É professora do Programa de Pós-Graduação (Stricto Sensu - acadêmico) em Educação em Ciências e Matemática (PPGECM) e do Programa de Pós-Graduação (Stricto Sensu - profissional) em Ensino na Educação Básica (PPGEEB) da UFG. Coordena o Grupos de Pesquisa Colligat - (re)pensando a formação de professores de ciências na natureza (UFG) e participa, como pesquisadora, do grupo Grupo de Pesquisa em História da Biologia e Ensino (USP).

  • Roberto Abdala Junior, Federal University of Goiás

    Doutor em História pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG/2009), com pesquisa sobre memória social, cultura e história do Brasil na segunda metade do século XX, privilegiando a teleficção como fonte histórica e as memórias da ditadura empresarial-militar brasileira como objeto. Graduado em História (2001), é mestre em Educação (2003) pela UFMG, quando desenvolveu pesquisa sobre processos de construção de conhecimentos históricos mediados por filmes. Professor da Faculdade de História (FH) da Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG), leciona na graduação em História e nos Programas de Pós-Graduação em História e em Performances Culturais (Faculdade de Ciências Sociais ? FCS/UFG). Suas pesquisas estão no campo da Didática da História, privilegiando as relações entre narrativas audiovisuais e história/História, com ênfase nas performances culturais operadas pela linguagem. Atualmente é colaborador junto ao GUMELAB do Instituto de Estudos Latino-americanos da Universidade Livre de Berlim ( https://www.gumelab.net/index.html) e um dos coordenadores do Núcleo de Estudos de Usos Públicos da História
