Abstract

In this article, we propose to investigate how the general theories of Western science influenced and reflected in a very specific context: the archaeological excavations conducted in Brazil from the 1840s and 1890s, led by Brazilian and foreign researchers linked to several institutions. The publications of this research comprised an idea of what would be the Brazilian prehistoric man in their antiquity, lifestyle and racial and intellectual characteristics. The latter would be inferred from the intersection of four key data , namely: (i) cranial capacity; (Ii) artifactual production associated with skeletons; (Iii) ethnographic data and - risk- (iv) a preconception of what should be this prehistoric man
