La Topologie de Johann Benedict Listing (1808-1882) ; résonances dans quelques oeuvres de contemporains

La Topologie de Johann Benedict Listing (1808-1882) est encore peu connue de nos jours, lui l’est un peu plus pour d’autres réussites. Après avoir rappelé quelques éléments significatifs des deux écrits les plus considérables de son oeuvre, ses Vorstudien zur Topologie (1847) et son Der Census räumlicher Complexe oder Verallgemeinerung des Euler’schen Satzes von den Polyedern (1861), nous relèverons l’importance de cette discipline quasi-mathématique, qui introduisait et établissait le « qualitatif » en mathématique, au travers de ses résonances dans les oeuvres de grands contemporains tels Arthur Cayley (1821 - 1895), Peter Guthrie Tait (1831 - 1901) et James Clerk Maxwell (1831 - 1879), pour terminer sur son influence singulière dans l'oeuvre éclatée et encore aujourd'hui mal établie de Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914).Downloads
