Abstract

This article aims to interpret the medical practices and knowledge exposed by the surgeon Francisco Antônio de Sampaio in the Tratados de História Natural that he produced and in his dialogue with the men of science of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. We are interested in the ways in which his  healings, to use a common term at the time, were described and what was the material universe and the exchange of knowledge and doings that  he had in the space in which he worked. We highlight in this analysis the medical theories that the surgeon expounded in his scientific writings and  an assiduous circulation and resignification of knowledge and practices made by the “vulgar of the country”, as he wrote - among other expressions – in a laconic way to promote an erasure (and, in general) detraction of the therapies of these subordinate groups.
