Abstract

In this article, we will discuss the representation of the Middle Age in the movie The Name of the Rose, by Jean-Jacques Annaud. We aim to answer, among other subjects, how the movie represents the relationship between this historic period – and mainly the Church – with the science and knowledge of its own and previous times, and to clarify if the image of the Middle Age as a Dark Age, established by common sense, is questioned or reinforced. The analysis of these questions will be done in a wider debate about adequation of visual media to History transmission, and therefore also as a teaching instrument.
