Empathy in the health area
A case study of "Blindness", from José Saramago

Empathy is an innate ability that can be enhanced through relationships. This research aimed to understand the empathy relations in the context of health area in José Saramago's book named Blindness, as well as to identify the empathy behavior in the interaction between physician and patients presented in the narrative and exemplify alternatives for developing empathy in health field. It is suggested that the empathic behavior between health professionals and their patients, which can be developed by literature, art and meditation, enables the improvement of clinical practice and favors the relationship of trust between them, enabling quality and improvement to treatment.
