The translation presented here consists of the Preface to the French translation of Siris, a work by George Berkeley published in English in 1744 and translated into French in 1745 by David-Renaud Boullier. In this preface to Siris, published in French under the title Recherches sur les vertus de l'eau de goudron, où l'on a joint des réflexions philosophiques sur divers autres sujets, as well as offering a good summary of the work, Boullier explains Berkeley's immaterialist philosophy and presents it favourably as an interesting antidote to materialist conceptions.
