The recent closure of three important scientific research institutes in the State of São Paulo represents a paramount point in a de-structuring process, which along practically twenty years, reveals that excellence criteria were ignored in favor of political arrangements, according to the history presented in the following book review. The negative impacts of such transformations witness the lack of knowledge of founding scientific traditions for the economic development of the State, with reflexes all around the country.
