Reflecting on how different versions of the concept of democracy reveal the theoretical virtues and deficiencies of distinct interpretations of the ideal of fundamental human equality, the notion of political equality, the scope of democracy, and the relationship between democracy and the broader universe of moral reflection on various forms of human relationships. The underlying theoretical theses are: (1) that various conceptions of equality are normatively appealing, but it is theoretically impossible to combine them all into a single ideal of democracy or a single ideal of social and human ought; and (2) that it is theoretically advantageous to conceive that, analytically, not all areas of reflection on the ought should be subordinated to democracy as a value, regardless of the particular conception of democracy adopted.
