Abstract

After a brief introduction to the topic “quality of democracy” –theoretical approaches, contexts of appearance as a field of studies (beyond debates on democratic transition and democratic consolidation), sources of information that empirically operationalizes the concept– this paper explores how the category has been used by the Argentinian and Brazilian politology, considering the hypothesis that, at least in part, such use is often away from the more elaborate theoretical definitions, making quality of democracy a kind of catch all concept which, by encompassing numerous objects or dimensions (political parties, state capacities, rule of law, accountability, constitutional reforms, rights exercises and so) becomes vague and imprecise, thus losing analytical potential
