A rhetorical analysis of the literary review genre in personal blogs

Abstract

Technological advancements have enabled the emergence of new languages and new genres. In the digital realm, the blog is considered a hypergenre that facilitates the publication of other genres, such as the literary review. This study aims to analyze the rhetorical organization of literary reviews published in blogs, based on the Create a Research Space (CARS) model proposed by Swales (1990) and its adaptation by Bezerra (2017). Additionally, this research seeks to examine how the appreciation category, part of the attitude subsystem – within the appraisal system – reflects the reviewer's evaluation of the work, grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as established by Martin and White (2005). This study is based on the perspective of genre as social action, developed by Miller (2008), and also draws upon the works of scholars such as Bakhtin (2016), Bonini (2011), and Motta-Roth (1995) for discussions on textual/discursive genres. The research is descriptive and interpretative in nature, with a qualitative approach, and the corpus comprises 10 literary reviews written in English and published in personal blogs. The results indicate that literary reviews are instantiated by texts in which both formal and colloquial writing styles are employed. A new rhetorical subunit, "informing about/describing characters," was also identified in the development of the analyzed genre.
