Thinking about Translation through Bakhtin, Thinking about Bakhtin through Translation

The reflection on possible links between translation studies and Bakhtinian thought that I present below had as its starting point the process of translating Mikhail Bakhtin's book The oeuvre of François Rabelais and the popular culture of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (1965), carried out by Sheila Vieira de Camargo Grillo and me. In my view, the parallel between the theory of Bakhtin and the Circle and that of translation can be thought of in three possible directions: as a dialogue between some concepts (exotopy, active understanding and dialogical encounter; incompleteness/inconclusibility; grotesque; polyphony; carnivalization); as a possibility of examining the translations of Bakhtin and the Circle through the prism of translation studies and as a set of Bakhtin's reflections on translation.
