The Female Reality shaped By Language: Stereotyping and Misogyny

Abstract

Within the scope of the broader theme of this publication, Text, Society and Democracy, we aim with this research to perform a semiolinguistic analysis of the representation of women in different contexts. In particular, we propose to investigate the textual-discursive construction of the prejudice still prevalent today against women in terms of their ridicule, criminalization and violation. In order to carry out this work, we will focus both on (i) two questions elaborated for a public examination that were cancelled due to their sexist content and on (ii) a fictional narrative with argumentative potential – in this case, the novel The invisible life of Eurydice Gusmão (Batalha, 2016) –  in the analysis of a history of misogyny. We will use a descriptive-interpretative methodology, taking into account the theoretical and methodological path proposed by Charaudeau, in three levels: situational, discursive and semiolinguistic. We hope to contribute to the linguistic research and bring to light a topic that unfortunately still needs to be much discussed.
