Love as a break in the cycle of violence in Corpo Desfeito, by Jarid Arraes

This study explores the role of love as a factor in overcoming intergenerational violence in the life of the protagonist Amanda, from the book Corpo Desfeito (Dismembered Body) by Jarid Arraes (2022). Focused on the relationship between Amanda and Jéssica, the work investigates how this affection operates as a disruptive force in the cycle of violence transmitted across generations. The analysis considers the novel’s chronotope, according to the concept developed by Bakhtin (1993), where the time of pre-adolescence and restrictive family spaces serve as a symbolic backdrop for the character's dynamics of oppression and resistance. Grounded in the concepts of ‘family justice’ and ‘loyalty’ by Boszormenyi-Nagy and Spark (1983), as well as the concept of ‘family myth’ by Burche (1985), this study interprets generational impositions as myths of control and abuse that shape Amanda’s psychological development. The qualitative and interpretive method shows that, by building a genuine affective bond with Jéssica, Amanda reconfigures the emotional environment around her, resisting patterns of violence and questioning the normalization of aggression as synonymous with love. It is concluded that the experience of authentic affection allows Amanda to reinterpret the meaning of love and identity, and thus, break the legacy of oppression.
