Abstract

This article provides a brief historical tour on the development of technical and scientific languages through a review of literature and lexicographic studies in order to explain how language has been transformed in line with the advancement of knowledge and technique. At the same time, it seeks to expose the methodological approach that has been given to those languages and how this approach has varied according to the time and the social and economic changes worldwide. In this journey it is also possible to see how the development of science and technology has been transformed and specialized to the point of establishing the need for international standards that provide general guidelines on the scope of Languages with Special Purposes (LSP). This way, the developments that led to the emergence of terminology as a science and the international terminology standardization from ISO and its technical committee 37 of them can be clearly tracked.
