This article examines the construction of interior spaces in two short stories by Edgar Allan Poe. These texts are aligned with the psychiatric studies of his times, creating an architecture of the pathologies of the mind, such as schizophrenia in ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ (2004 [1843]) and dissociative identity disorder in ‘William Wilson’ (2004 [1839]). The article proposes comparisons between Poe's narrative-pictorial prose and Archiatric, a series of architectural images reflecting psychopathologies by illustrator Federico Babina. The article analyzes the architectural construction of these short stories, and the ways in which both infra and superstructural, as well as ornamental spaces, are represented to describe turbulent psychic states on which modern psychiatry focuses. In his hermeneutics of the mind, Poe dialogs with Western archetypes, myths, and fables, translating images of the unconscious into concrete spaces. Therefore, the short stories will be analyzed according to the theoretical framework of Gaston Bachelard’s poetics of space.
