Abstract

Based on the study of the letter as a form of self-writing that enables the creation of a conversation with an absent other, breaking into everyday life and presenting different levels of meaning, we will examine the presence of missives in the contemporary Brazilian narrative Memorial do fim a morte de Machado de Assis (2004), by Pará writer Haroldo Maranhão. Grounded in the critical-theoretical studies of Foucault (2012), Harouche-Bouzinac (2016), Diaz (2016), and other scholars of the epistolary genre, we will explore how Maranhão's narrative, through the use of fictitious letters, tends to create the illusion of contextualized daily records, since its practice allows for an examination of the consciousness and the challenges faced during the final days of the fictionalized Machado de Assis within the storyline.
