Informativity as a Textual Strategy in Religious Speech in Defense of Democracy

Abstract

This study is justified by the need to understand religious speeches and their democratizing role in the current sociopolitical context, defined by the rise of fundamentalism and intolerance. Despite this scene, voices of resistance are stood out, promoting the strengthening of democracy, such as the Mixed Parliamentary Front Against Racism, the Brazilian Commission for Justice and Peace, and the National Council of the Laity of Brazil. This work aims to revisit the informativity principle, describing and interpreting its functioning in religious speeches which advocate for religious plurality, human rights, and Brazilian democracy. The research embraces a qualitative methodology based on textual analysis of a corpus composed by the minutes of a meeting of the Mixed Parliamentary Front Against Racism (2023) and a public statement (2024) sponsored by religious and social entities regarding the attempted coup in 2022. The analysis is based on the theoretical framework of Textual Linguistics, emphasizing the contributions of Beaugrande and Dressler (1997). The results reveal that the analyzed texts present a medium degree of Informativity, balancing information produced as known and unknown in a didactic and argumentative manner, guided by the defense of religious diversity and the promotion of inclusive political debate.
