Discourse, Performance and Context: Social Meanings in the Debate of Candidates for Mayor of the City of São Paulo on September 1, 2024

This article analyzes the debate among candidates for mayor of São Paulo on September 1, 2024, understanding the construction of social meanings through the interaction between discourse, performance, and context. Using Blommaert's (2005) concepts of discourse as a situated semiotic activity and Fairclough's (2001) ideas about the relationship between discourse and power, we explore how the candidates, particularly PM, used certain discursive resources to construct their public images and achieve their electoral goals. The analysis showed how PM, throughout the debate, sought to deconstruct the image associated with crimes, minimize the relevance of the other candidates' proposals, and reinforce his image as the only one with a serious project for the city, through social categorizations and semiotic resources. Additionally, we observed how the candidate constructed his image as a "servant of the people," standing out as a genuine figure in contrast to other politicians. We conclude that political discourse, immersed in social and cultural contexts, has the power to transform realities and exert influence over symbolic disputes in the electoral arena.
