Abstract

This paper seeks to recover the main reflections on ekphrasis within the scope of lyric poetry, published between the second half of the twentieth century and the early years of the twenty-first century. Beginning with the rehabilitation of the term by Leo Spitzer (2002), it outlines a path that identifies seminal points in the debate, such as Murray Krieger’s ekphrastic principle (2019), according to which the illusion of the natural (pictorial) sign would be the main ambition of the procedure; James Heffernan’s paragonal model (1993), based on a (ideological) dichotomous perspective between text and image; and the recognition of a collaborative dialogic relationship between the verbal and the visual, as advocated by Elizabeth Loizeaux (2008), David Kennedy (2012, 2015), and Claus Clüver (2019).
