Abstract

The Islamic movement in Saudi Arabia, al-Sahwa, questioned the internal and external policies of the Saudi monarchy and sought to define a politically engaged Islamic identity, grounded in the example of the People of the Sunna. The fatwas issued by its members articulated the concepts of renewal, reform, and puritanism, in conjunction with the quietist tradition of Muhammad Ibn al-Wahhab. This work aims to observe how translocality studies aid in understanding Islamic activism in the Gulf, and their conceptualization of “Islamic tradition”. Thus, it seeks to comprehend the Sahwa discourse as a product that extends beyond local issues, pursuing a translocal rhetoric of true Muslim conduct at the end of the 20th century.
