This article examines the events in Egypt since the fall of dictator Hosni Mubarak, in February 2011, in light of two dynamics that shape the country today: the influence of the military on politics and the duel between the secular and religious identities. The purpose of the analysis is to show how the interaction between these two dynamics has become a major obstacle to the democratization of Egypt, by making the political dispute a zero-sum game in which the winners aim to suppress dissenting voices.Downloads
