Contemporary children’s literature has been highlighted by the strong dialogue between written text and graphic design, which covers not only the illustrations but all the visual elements, including the ones related to the book materiality. Considering the importance of the graphic aspects for children's books, we propose an investigation of their role in narrative construction. For the analysis, we selected two books: Visita à baleia, written by Paulo Venturelli and illustrated by Nelson Cruz; and Inês, written by Roger Mello and illustrated by Mariana Massarani. These books were awarded in 2013 and 2016, respectively, by two important institutions: the National Children and Youth Book Foundation, with the "The Best for Children" award, and the Brazilian Chamber of Books, with the Jabuti Prize. As a theoretical reference, we've chosen studies on illustration and graphic design of children's books - Nikolajeva and Scott (2011), Moraes (2008), Linden (2011) and Ramos (2013). Based on our analysis, we assume that the graphic design of awarded children's books has become fundamental for the construction of meanings, contributing to the successful dialogue between written text and illustration.
