Criticism and contagion: a-signifying communication in Lazzarato and Preciado

Abstract

This paper discusses the distinction between signifying semiologies and a-signifying semiotics, conceived by Félix Guattari and resumed by Maurizio Lazzarato in the scope of a critique of contemporary capitalism. For the Italian, investigating language is not only insufficient, as it also helps to conceal the machinic effectiveness of the a-signifying level. Recognizing therein an epistemological problem, we discuss the importance of considering passages between these levels, lest the a-signifying be cast outside the sphere of the knowable. In a comparative exercise, we suggest that the experimental attitude of Paul B. Preciado provides a useful route for the investigation and translation of specific a-signifying operations.
