Abstract

In this article, we aim to understand the oscillations between an automatic continuity of the processes regarding photography and the possibilities of “manual restart” – momentary suspensions of the photographic automatism. As a guide, Bruno Latour’s anthropology of the moderns is used, through which we develop the notion of photographic automatism as a crossing between the ways of technique existence and habit. Those practices are demonstrated through the narrative of seven people accustomed to use the smartphone to photograph, demonstrating how, in addition to momentary suspend the photographic automatism, they make new mediations possible to the photographic processes.
