Abstract

Luis Carlos Martins Pena (1815-1848) is recognized by
literary historiography as the founder of national comedy
of manners. With the staging of O Juiz de Paz da
Roça, in 1838, he started a new propositon in the brazilian
theather, introducing social, political and economic
aspects of the imperial society. The author not only
wrote countless comic plays, but was also dedicated to
the composition of historical dramas, barely studied.
With the historiography investigation of carioca press
on the 1840 decade, in the periodic Jornal do Commercio
and Diário do Rio de Janeiro, we intend to reveal unknown
information about the plays Vitiza ou O Nero de
Espanha and A Mulher Feia, the only two dramas staged
by the author in life. This paper presents the story of
these two dramas and contextualizes its representations
in the most important theather of the Court, the
São Pedro de Alcântara’s Theater.
