Abstract

Being the result of the growth of the cities and one of the defining elements of their modernization, the suburb is a singular space in the constitution of the metropolis. In Rio de Janeiro, the imaginary of the city's concept of “suburb” went through an important change after the urban renovation that took place in the beginning of the 20th century. Up to today, that change affects the stories situated in this territory. This article aims to analyze how the issue of time in these suburban narratives relates to the imaginary surrounding this space in Rio de Janeiro.
