On sexism and gender stereotypes: advertising and mirrors of social representation

Abstract

We analyze old and new gender stereotypes in advertisements for cosmetic items from two eras: the fifties and today. Seventy years of cultural change passed between these two historical moments, yet many stereotypes seem intact. Appealing to the theoretical contributions of authors such as R. Barthes, we trace conditions for emerging discursivities from the sociopolitical inflection of #NiUnaMenos in Latin America, #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter on a global scale. Inspired by artistic representations, we seek to make an original contribution to a non-sexist and diverse advertising communication.
