The first species of Curticornis Gordon (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) described from Brazil

Abstract

Curticornis Gordon, 1971 comprises five species of neotropical lady beetles. This genus was proposed by Gordon to include species of the Cryptognathini with a laterally expanded clypeus that divides the eyes. All its species are black with some reddish area or vice versa, and smaller than 2.3 mm. Curticornis is the only genus among the similar genera of Pentiliini and Cryptognathini without any species occurring in Brazil. The present study describes the first Curticornis species from Brazil, Curticornis monnei Duarte-de-Mélo & Churata sp. nov., and updates the identification key proposed by Gordon. The key now includes six Curticornis species.
