Abstract

This paper critically examines several taxonomic issues specific to the South American bivalve fauna, with a particular focus on the Atlantic coast. Some of these issues are introduced or endorsed by Huber’s two compendia on bivalves (2010, 2015), which led to significant taxonomic and nomenclatural changes across the global Bivalvia. Here four nomina oblita/nomina protecta cases are analyzed in this study. One of them is resolved: Phyllodina tenuisculpta (Sowerby II, 1868) is treated as a nomen oblitum, while Phyllodina persica (Dall & Simpson, 1901) is recognized as a nomen protectum. For the remaining three cases, this paper fulfills the requirements of Article 23.9.2 in asserting that status; however, a definitive resolution depends on submissions to the Commission to address pending issues to attend Articles 23.9.3 and 23.9.6. All arguments are presented in detail. The taxa are: Temnoconcha galathaea (Lamarck, 1818) should be considered a nomen oblitum, with Temnoconcha brasiliana (Dall, 1921) recognized as valid and nomen protectum. Similarly, Chionopsis crenata (Gmelin, 1791) should be also identified as a nomen oblitum, with Chionopsis pubera (Bruguière, 1791) established as valid and nomen protectum, including a rectification of authority. Spondylus tenuis Schreibers, 1793 and S. ambiguus Chenu, 1844 should be classified as both a nomen oblitum and, the former, a possible n. dubium, while Spondylus ictericus Reeve, 1856 should be accepted as valid and nomen protectum. Four synonymies are also analyzed. The synonymy of Anomalocardia flexuosa (Linnaeus, 1767) and A. brasiliana (Gmelin, 1791) is provisionally accepted, considering that they may represent distinct entities, as is the case with Tivela dentaria (Lamarck, 1818) and T. isabelleana (d’Orbigny, 1846). The synonymy between Sphenia fragilis (H. & A. Adams, 1854) and Sphenia antillensis Dall & Simpson, 1901 is rejected, with the latter updated to S. iheringiana (Pilsbry, 1897). Additionally, the synonymy between Petricolaria serrata (Deshayes, 1853) and Petricola stellae Narchi, 1975 is also disregarded. All justifications are properly explained and discussed.
