Two new species of the hyalid amphipod genus Protohyale Bousfield & Hendrycks, 2002 are described from remote oceanic islands off Brazil. Protohyale trinitensis sp. nov., from Trindade Island, was previously misidentified as P. macrodactyla (Stebbing, 1899). The new species is distinguished from congeners by the adult male gnathopod 1 with the palmar corner defined by a blunt spine accompanied by two robust setae, and by the male gnathopod 2 with a nearly straight palm lacking processes and lined with long plumose setae. Protohyale sanctipauli sp. nov., from the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago, can be recognized by the adult male gnathopod 1 with the palmar corner defined by a single robust seta and by the male gnathopod 2 with a concave palm occupying almost the entire posterior margin and defined by two robust setae. With the description of these species, the genus Protohyale now includes 49 recognized species worldwide. The occurrence of P. trinitensis sp. nov. also demonstrates that previous Brazilian records attributed to P. macrodactyla likely represent misidentifications, indicating the need for a taxonomic reassessment of that species in the region.
