Abstract

A new species of Rhinotocinclus is described from the Rio Oiapoque basin in the Amazon basin. The new species belongs to its genus by the presence of a canal cheek-plate on the ventral surface of the cranium that is elongated posteriorly and contacts the anterior margin of the cleithrum. The new species is assigned to the R. collinsae group, including R. collinsae, R. halbothi, and R. hardmanni. The R. collinsae group is diagnosable from other congeners by: 1) the presence of conspicuous dark dots smaller than the pupil diameter, 2) darkened sensory pores present on head, 3) snout coloration uniform, 4) odontodes on ventral surface of pelvic-fin unbranched ray aligned with main ray axis, and 5) accessory teeth on both premaxilla and dentary. The new species differs from other species of the R. collinsae group by having the second and third lateral stripes fused into one broad dark stripe surpassing the lateral line between the anal-fin and caudal-fin bases. The new species occurs in the rio Oiapoque basin, the geographically closest basin to the currently known distribution of the group.
