Of Walking Chalices: The Expression of Events in the German Lutheran Bible (2017). A Typological Analysis Based on Talmy

This paper examines the expression of events in the German 2017 edition of the Luther Bible based on Leonard Talmy’s typology. Talmy distinguishes languages according to how motion is lexicalized. The dominant categories are ‘manner’ and ‘path’, with German classified as a satellite-framed language. Path is therefore expressed outside of the verb. A detailed analysis of Matthew chapters 26 and 27 shows that, even in the biblical context, German predominantly expresses manner in verbs, while path is mainly represented through prepositions, particles and prefixes. Moreover, a large number of verb stems including possession-change verbs, encode both path and manner. The results support Talmy’s typology and demonstrate that the semantic encoding of motion events is preserved in both literary and translated texts, and does not correspond to a universally valid concept.
