Migration of Brazilian Health Care Workers to Germany: New Horizons and Challenges for the area of German Studies in Brazil

Considering the recent labor migration waves from Brazil to Germany, this article aims to identify research directions for the area of German Studies in Brazil, especially with regards to teachers' training of German as a Foreign Language (GFL). The first part of the article briefly discusses the history of migration between Brazil and Germany, highlighting that economic issues that were once the driving force behind German mobility to Brazil are now fueling the opposite trend and are reflected in the attraction of Brazilian migrants to work in the health sector. We argue that labor migration is underpinned by the narrative of overcoming the perspective that prevailed in the 1950s and 1960s, with an emphasis on temporary migration (Rotationsprinzip), and the current right to professional self-fulfillment made possible by brain circulation. Finally, we present an overview of the discussions currently underway, which reveal a research agenda based on this reorientation of German foreign migration policy, with a focus on the language training of migrant communities and its effects on the training of German language teachers.
