[“Verborgen muß die wahre Liebe bleiben”: covering and un/discovering the homoerotic desire in a sonnet by August von Platen

The lyrical oeuvre of August von Platen (1796–1835) occupies an unusual place in German-language literary historiography. On the one hand, the virtuosity with which he handles the creative possibilities of the sonnet form and the ghazal form attracted the attention and admiration of his readers very early on; on the other hand, however, it can also be said that the ostentatious depictions of homoerotic desire found in many of these poems caused revulsion among his immediate audience. Reviews and letters cited throughout this article and signed by readers such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) and Ludwig Robert (1778-1832) report a certain reception of Platen as a poet of formal perfection poisoned or rotten by the homoerotic element that insists on offering itself to view. Based on this immediate reception and the elements of the sonnet form emphasised by Platen, this article aims to analyse the poem “[Was kann die Welt für unser Glück empfinden]” (1828) and the way in which homoerotic desire is depicted at the crossroads between the intimate and public spheres, between us and them. In other words, we investigate what is covered in the (dis)covered desire.
