The dead-end and the stripe: analysis of data against formal exploration

This article describes an educational experiment of the observation of the non-assisted design processes of two groups of third-year architecture students in which one group relied upon an analysis of objective data to create a project that can be characterized as "formalist" (privileging form over other design constraints), and a second group, starting from formal exploration, achieved a balanced result, a synthesis of the constraints of the project. These findings raise important questions about the role of form in the teaching of design.Downloads
