Abstract

This study belongs to design research and explores the design thinking process. It aims to find the relation between the cognitive actions which influence design decisions within professional practice. This study has accepted the hypothesis that data collected from observations in actual design practice could enable us to assess the missing variables in artificial experiments. Analysis of the reasoning behind an architect’s talk while he designed a residence was explored based on a case study made at one office in the municipality of Belo Horizonte/MG. Several phrases recorded during the observation were segmented and analyzed and cognitive actions during the design activity, encoded. Our findings indicate two new cognitive actions which support and supplement the original coding scheme and suggest their continuous growth to build an increasingly complete protocol of the architectural design process.
