Adenomatous Polyposis Coli: the unheimlich of a heredity

This study discusses the anguish due to familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) according to a clinical and genetic study with a large family living in a rural area of northeastern Brazil based on the Freudian concept of unheimilich. Family members affected by FAP (a hereditary predisposition syndrome to cancer resulting from germline variants in the APC gene) for seven generations were interviewed. The qualitative treatment of the interviews resulted in the following categories of analysis: Transmission of an (in)familial mark and Sentence of a family: the unheimlich of inherited death. FAP constitutes a mark of the family that identifies and links them and causes fear as it inscribes their sentence. The unheimilich lies in the repetition of the same death in each generation, causing anguish as its effects are old acquaintances.
