Career guidance and counseling constitutes a specialized field of applied psychology that focuses on helping individuals reflect on and plan their working future. This field currently encounters several paradoxes that we aim to identify and discuss. Paradoxes consist of co-occurring contradictory and conflicting situations, making them challenging to synthesize. Drawing from social psychology and recent developments in the counseling field, we will explore these contemporary paradoxes and indicate strategies for addressing them. Today’s world significantly challenge the construction of narratives, identities, and histories. We face a lack of validated social references, disinformation, and an overwhelming focus on the present that hinders future planning. Additionally, the flexibilization of work and the individualization of life complicate our understanding of ourselves and the world, making it hard to create dignified career trajectories. We will discuss potential strategies for coping with these challenges, emphasizing key elements crucial for effective counseling interventions.
