Abstract

This article discusses the concept of sublimation in its relationship with the instance of the Self and its capacity to agency the transformation promoted by analysis. The central thesis is that there are sublimations by the Self and sublimations into the Self. Besides the classic conception of sublimation as a drive destiny, as proposed by Freud and, later, Laplanche, I introduce the idea of “sublimated self” elaborated by the French psychoanalyst Jean Guillaumin. The objective is to point to sublimation as a phenomenon present in the transference event mediated by the encounter with a primordial otherness, therefore expanding the idea of sublimation linked to socially recognized cultural production. To this end, I present a brief theorization about the formation of the Self and the sublimated material, differentiating sublimation in the repression model and the trauma model, to articulate the concept with that of transference. The final proposal is that observing this nuance helps planning treatment.
