Sabina Spielrein and Jean Piaget: a history to be rediscovered

Sabina Spielrein, a Russian psychoanalyst, proposed an original theory based on an innovative perspective in psychoanalysis by linking psychoanalytical hypotheses to other fields of knowledge, such as neurology and linguistics. Despite having remained for a long time in oblivion, her contribution has been acknowledged in recent years. By meeting with Jean Piaget, at the Institute Jean Jacques Rousseau, she established a significant dialogue for formulating her theory. Apparently, this dialogue played an important role in Piaget’s theory of psychology developed in the 1920s, fact little known and investigated in the history of psychology and psychoanalysis. This article retraces the history of their encounter, clarifying its context and pointing out some aspects of their theoretical interlocution.
