Perpetrators of child sexual assault and their risk and protective factors throughout development

This descriptive and exploratory research aims to analyze elements of the life trajectory of perpetrators of sexual aggression against children and adolescents based on the perspective of Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model of human development, focusing on developmental risk and protection factors. By analyzing three cases whose authors had been tried in courts for crimes against children and adolescents, data from a questionnaire to characterize the perpetrators of sexual assault and a semi-structured interview script were included. Sexual aggression has no well-defined etiology, showing a multifactorial cause with biological, social, and psychological factors. Individuals subjected to frequent constant forms of aggression under prolonged duration, may constitute the perpetrator of tomorrow’s aggression. Note the need to think about a conjunction of several unfavorable developmental conditions that can lead individuals to dysfunctional behaviors in their adult life, such as difficult socioeconomic circumstances, characterized by the constant vicissitudes due to poverty, such as difficulties in accessing a range of guarantee of rights, including to school, health, and housing.
