Abstract

This paper discusses the bias underlying the normative models of family structure present in psychological, sociological and pedagogical research, especially when working class families are the subject of study. In such families their struggle for survival frequently demands structures very different from what is considered"normal" by researchers. This can lead to errors of evaluation and interpretation even in scientific studies.
