Abstract

This paper presents a synthesis of the Generalized Seduction Theory of Jean Laplanche enphasizing the encounter with alterity in the processes of constitution and reconstitution of the self. Then, the very notion of alterity implicit in Laplanche's work is discussed. An alternative conception is proposed; here alterity is conceived as 'emergency' and happening in the same process of self-constitution.
