Abstract

The article places history in modern thinking , firstly in the context of the classical distinction between Humanities and Natural Sciences and secondly in the more recent context of interdisciplinarity with its hybrid themes. Starting from this premise, the consequences of the repositioning of the frontiers between History and other subjects is discussed, emphasizing the emergent interest in the collective, everyday life, imaginary and mental structures. The importance of social memory for the history of mentalities is stressed as well as the nature and the problem of the methodological renewal which it requires.
