The unsaid in ethnographies about Brazilians in Ireland: euphemisms and displacements of raceisms and race displacements

This article explores the impact of different racial orders on Brazilian migratory processes. It focuses on the experiences of Brazilians in Ireland, based on data from an ethnography conducted in the first half of 2022. The text compares this situation with two other instances of “shuffling of racial orders”: Brazilian immigrants in Porto in 2000 and refugees in Brazil over the last decade. These two sets of research exemplify how migration is influenced by and impacts different racial orders, with significant implications for the daily lives of immigrants. The article argues that existing literature on Brazilian immigrants in Ireland fails to recognise a marked contrast between the experiences of those with work visas and those with student visas, with a racial inversion in the labour market that tends to favour black Brazilian immigrants with work visas over white immigrants with study visas who often have more years of schooling.
