Fake representatives: dynamics of political representation in Indigenous Communities in the Peruvian Amazon

While the concept of political representation as a delegation of power has historically had limited relevance in the social organizations of indigenous peoples in the Amazon, it is evident that over the past thirty years, this notion has emerged, sometimes prominently, in indigenous political arenas and has become a common term in the discourse of local leaders. Drawing inspiration from Michael Saward’s dynamic and relational approach to political representation (2010), this article examines the claims to represent made by various actors and the representation dynamics they generate within the Kakataibo communities (Peruvian Amazon). Emphasizing the significance of performing the representation relationship, especially during the annual village festival, the article sheds light on the transactional, partial, and contingent nature of political representation in the Amazonian indigenous context.
