The aim of this artícle is to díscuss the role played by hierarchy and fainily values in organizing the migration of Japanese to Brazil, from other parts of Brazil to the Federal District, and lately of "nissei" and "sansei" from Brazil to Japan. The main body of data refers to the Federal District and reveals conflicts betwee n traditional and modern values as well as the ambiguities of a Japanese-Brazilian identity. Migration back to Japan is also seen as a kind of rite of passage for the social constructíon (Bildung) of the person.Downloads
